Deep Massage - The Go-To for Muscle Pain

Deep Tissue massage is one of the primary techniques used for severe muscle tension and pain. This deep massage goes beyond the first layer of muscle and addresses the layer beneath. It also penetrates to the connective tissue and  fascia surrounding the muscle breaking up tension and adhesions.

Deep Tissue massage is used when people are having consistent or repetitive pain, for patients who have been injured, and for those perform repetitive or heavy activity.

The skill of the therapist is very important in their effectiveness in using this technique. It takes training strength and experience to uncover the offending muscles and apply the correct combination of technique and pressure to bring relief.

Patients respond differently to this massage. Some feel instant relief and sleep well afterwards. Some are sore a day or so after the massage. It is important to communicate with your therapist during the massage and afterward so your treatment can be best customized to your specific needs.

Trigger Point Massage - Getting to the Root of the Problem

Do ever you have a literal pain in your neck? That one spot that kills - it radiates up to your head or down your shoulder? Maybe you don't even know the offending spot is, but you feel the effects of it in your head or elsewhere.

Trigger points ( sites) are tight spots in a muscle that cause pain and discomfort in other areas. This is sometimes called "referred pain" - meaning that pain you feel is actually coming from another location, although the trigger point itself can also be very painful. The trigger point can be any muscle - neck, back, legs,arms, etc, and radiate to a variety of other muscles. The pain can be stabbing, dully, throbbing or just plain ache.

Trigger point therapy is designed to locate the offending source and relieve it through a targeted pressure and release process. The therapist will often ask the client to participate in this process by taking deep breaths at strategic times.

Many patients notice immediate relief after a treatment. For those with chronic trigger point, repeated treatments may be needed to achieve long term relief.

Myofacia Release - Increase Motion

Myofacia Release is a safe and quite effective hands - on technique that involves applying pressure into the myofacia connective tissue to reduce pain and restore motion. Myofacia Release increases circulation and venous and lymphatic drainage, relaxes muscles, and stimulates flexibility of muscles and fascia.

Cupping - What's All the Fuss About?

The 2016 Olympics brought a technique into the spotlight which In2itive Massage Therapy is passionate about- cupping! Cupping is a technique in which the therapist uses cups that create a suction and vacuum pressure to the body. This brings hydration and blood flow to the area, lifts deep inflammation to the skin surface for release, and drains excess fluid and toxins by opening the lymphatic pathways.

Therapist use cupping to soften tight muscles, loosen adhesions, break up scar tissue, relieve neck and back pain, migraines, rheumatism and even cellulite. Cupping has a unique way od sedating the nervous system (good for high blood pressure!) and is helpful for anxiety.

You May have noticed the "cup kisses" on contestants at the Olympics. Our cupping technique often avoids these marks but sometimes they do occur. If you notice cup kisses after a massage, don't panic- they aren't bruises! Rather the cup kisses indicate that intense stagnation of toxins and body fluid has been released from that area. They will disappear within a few hours or days.

In2itive Massage Therapy also uses cupping for lymphatic massage. Lymph is watery fluid found throughout the body. This fluid sustains the immune system and its function in removing unwanted bacteria and materials. Good lymph fluid movement through the body is essential to good immune function, and a gentle cup massage can get that fluid moving.

Nicole DeLaCruz, LMT is certified in ACE Cupping and tailors each massage to the client's individual needs.

Swedish Massage - Relaxation at its Finest

Swedish massage is one of the most popular styles of massage. Long, flowing strokes penetrate muscles relaxing and stimulating them. Swedish massage also uses kneading ( petrissage), rhythmic tapping ( tapotement), cross fiber ( friction), and vibration/shaking. These are all done very gently and most people experience the Swedish massage to be quite relaxing while at the same time relieving general muscle tension.

In addition to the obvious benefits of muscle and tension relaxation, many patients have experienced reduced pain, less joint stiffness, and improved function in knees with osteoarthritis over a period of eight weeks. It is also know to improve circulation.

Per Henrik Ling is credited with developing the Swedish massage. Johan Georg Mezgar is believed to have adopted the French names for basic strokes. Ironically, the term "Swedish massage" is not really used in the country Sweden-instead, this massage is referred to as a "classic massage."

Stone Massage - Hot Stone massage

In stone massages, hot stones are used to apply pressure to stressed or tense areas of the body. The stones can also be coated with oil and used for various massage strokes. The stones used are usually river stones that have become extremely polished and smooth over time.

A hot stone massage is a uniquely comforting experience. The warmth from the stones penetrate deeply into tense muscles relaxing and warming them. Sometimes the therapist will leave the stones sitting on specific areas allowing them to do their work. A stone  massage usually combines other massage technique along with the stones. Be sure to share with your therapist specific areas you are hoping to have addressed, this will help with oil selection.

Sports Massage - Keep Those Muscle Limber

Sport massage is a form of Swedish massage customized to athletes. It focuses on increasing blood and lymphatic fluid flow and reducing and eliminating pain by relaxing muscles and locating trigger points. When muscle tension and tightness is reduced range of motion is increased.

There are 4 common types of sports massage

* Pre-event

* Post-event

* Restorative

* Rehabilitative

Athletes use the pre-event sports massage right before an event to relax the muscles and increase fluid flow to encourage optimal results.

Post - event sports massage is recommended after an event or as maintenance for full-time athletes. This massage helps calm irritate muscles, helps the body transition out of the intensity of an event, and encourages ongoing flexibility. The increase in fluid flow helps sore and damaged areas to heal.

Restorative sports massage is used help restore damaged and tired muscles. As its name suggests, this massage's goal is to help restore injured muscles and reduce tension in areas that are upset. This one is more common if the pre-event massage have not been regularly used.

Pregnancy Massage

What pregnant mother doesn't know that pulls, stabs, and aches that extra weight can cause? Standing on your feet all day, laying in bed weird, even sitting differently can strain muscle and add to the discomfort - which seems to multiply every week! A pregnancy massage can relax the muscles, reduce the stress, and provide some much needed comfort.

As with most of our massages, the pregnancy massage combines a mixture of massage techniques customized to the particular need of the patient.

Lymphatic Massage - Open Up the Pathways

Lymphatic Massage focuses on encouraging the lymph system to function optimally. The lymph system is part of the circulatory system and is made up of many lymphatic vessels which are networked together creating pathways that ultimately carry lymph fluid towards the heart. The lymph system is an important part of the immune system and when the fluid doesn't flow freely it can contribute to many kind of health problems.

A lymphatic massage includes gentle strokes along the lymphatic pathways which stimulates lymph fluid to flow and breaks up stagnation. These techniques may be combined to with massage technique to create balance and healing to the whole body.
